What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

 

Its a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans provide all of your Part A and Part B benefits.

 

 

Medicare Advantage Plans include:

• HMO or Health Maintenance Organizations - A PCP is usually required

• PPO or Preferred Provider Organizations - A PCP is usually NOT required

• Private Fee-for-Service Plans -PFFS

• Special Needs Plans - SNP's are designed for people with Medicaid

• Chronic Special Needs Plan - CSNP's are designed for individuals with Chronic medical conditions

• Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans - MSA's

If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan:

• Most Medicare services are covered through the plan

• Medicare services aren’t paid for by Original Medicare

• Most Medicare Advantage Plans also offer prescription drug coverage

• Many Medicare Advantage Plans also off dental, vision and hearing coverage

Do I qualify to join a Medicare Advantage plan?

 

You can generally join a Medicare Advantage Plan if you meet all of the following conditions:

 

• You live in the service area of the plan you want to join

• You have Medicare Part A and Part B

• You don't have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

How much does a Medicare Advantage Plan cost?

 

In addition to your monthly part B premium (usually $135.50) you must pay a monthly premium for the services included in the plan. The standard Part B premium amount in 2019 is $135.50. The total cost of the premiums, co-payments and deductibles you pay under a Medicare Advantage plan is often lower than the total costs for coinsurance, co-payments and deductibles in Original Medicare. Each Medicare Advantage Plan charges different premiums and has different costs for services, so it’s imperative to check with the plan before you join.
