Understanding Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage plans are a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans include HMO's, PPO's, PFFS, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, most Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren’t paid for under Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans also offer prescription drug coverage.

How Medicare Advantage Plans Work

Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes referred to as "Part C" or "MA Plans," are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still have Medicare. If you decide to enroll into an Advantra Medicare Advantage plan, You'll get your Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) coverage from Advantra and not Original Medicare.

How much does a Medicare Advantage plan cost?

In addition to your monthly part B premium (usually $174.70 for 2024) you must pay a monthly premium for the services included in the plan. The total cost of the premiums, co-payments and deductibles you pay under an Advantra Medicare Advantage plan is often lower than the total costs for co-insurance, co-payments and deductibles in Original Medicare. Each Medicare Advantage Plan charges different premiums and has different costs for services, so it’s imperative to check with the plan before you join.
